Welcome to Wheatfield, NY

Wheatfield is a town in southern Niagara County, tucked between the cities of Niagara Falls (to the west) and North Tonawanda to the south. Wheatfield also is bordered to the north by Lewiston and Cambria, to the east by Pendleton, to the south by the Niagara River and to the west by the town of Niagara. Part of the Niagara Falls International Airport is in the northern part of Wheatfield. Erie County is just beyond the Niagara River to the south, with Amherst to the southeast and Grand Island to the southwest.

Again, there are loads of places to shop and dine nearby but not so much in Wheatland. The closest Wegmans supermarkets are on Military Road in Niagara Falls and on Niagara Falls Boulevard in Amherst (just 6 miles southeast). Tops Friendly Markets has a store on Meadow Drive in North Tonawanda and two stores in Niagara Falls (on Niagara Falls Boulevard and on Portage Road). North Tonawanda also has an Aldi grocery store. For retail shopping, Niagara Falls has a Walmart Supercenter, a Kmart, Sam’s Club, and Fashion Outlets of Niagara Falls. North Tonawanda has a Walmart Supercenter, a Family Dollar and other stores. The now-closed Summit Park Mall is in Wheatfield.

Recreation & Entertainment

The major attractions here are in Niagara Falls, both in the U.S. and Canadian cities. The waterfalls are major tourist attractions for visitors from all over the world. On the American side, Niagara Falls State Park (the first state park established in the United States) has the Cave of the Winds, which gets pedestrians up close to the incredible falls; the Niagara Scenic Trolley; the Maid of the Mist, a boat journey that gets really close to the falls; the Niagara Gorge Discovery Center, the Niagara Aquarium and more. Niagara Falls also has the very popular Seneca Niagara Casino, which brings in visitors from throughout the region. The Canadian side of Niagara Falls has the more impressive falls and a smorgasbord of things to see and places to shop, dine and party. Niagara Falls, Canada is a major tourist mecca, moreso than the American side. But you’re crossing into another country, so expect lines at the border crossing and bring documentation like a passport or an enhanced New York State driver’s license.

Transportation & Traffic

Niagara Falls International Airport is partly in Wheatfield. Major highways running through Wheatfield include Route 62, Route 265, Route 425 and Route 429.

Pros & Cons

The town of Wheatfield has experienced a lot of growth in recent decades with new housing developments, but still has a largely rural character, with dairy farming the main venture. You’re just minutes away from the busier cities of Niagara Falls and North Tonawanda. A short drive north gets you to historic sites in Lewiston and a quick drive south and you’re in Buffalo.
