Overview The town of Hartland is on the eastern end of Niagara County, bordered to the north by Somerset, to the east by Orleans County (town of Ridgeway), to the south by Royalton and to the west by Newfane. Hartland has four hamlets, and a small part of the village of Middleport is in the southeast part of town. Hartland shares a school district with neighboring Royalton. Hartland’s Town Hall is actually located in Gasport, a hamlet in neighboring Royalton. Hartland is largely a wide-open rural town, with only a few small stores. Busier Lockport is a quick drive from here, with a much wider variety of places to shop and eat and things to do. Lake Ontario is a quick drive north from Hartland. Local Museums & Landmarks Hartland has several sites listed on the National Register of Historic Places: The Bixby House, the Amzi Bradley Farmstead, District #10 Schoolhouse, the Harrington Cobblestone Farmhouse and Barn Complex, and the Newton Cobblestone House. (Cobblestone buildings are quite unique to the area; a cobblestone museum is in Albion in Orleans County.)

Essentials For grocery shopping, Tops Friendly Markets has three stores in nearby Lockport (about 9 miles southwest) – on Lockport-Olcott Road, on Transit Road and on Rochester Road. The closest Wegmans supermarket is a good ways away, 25 miles southwest in Williamsville (on Transit Road). Middleport has a few small stores and Gasport has a Dollar General among the places to shop. Lockport is your best bet for grocery and retail shopping – the city, which is the county seat, has a Walmart and other major retailers that you won’t find in Hartland. Students here attend the Royalton-Hartland Central School District, which has one each elementary, middle and high schools. The closest hospital is Eastern Niagara in Lockport; another option is Medina Memorial Hospital, about 11 miles east in neighboring Orleans County. (Medina also has a number of places to shop and dine.) The Royalton Hartland Community Library serves residents of both towns and is at 9 Vernon St. in Middleport.

For a wider variety of things to do, head southwest to Lockport or east to Medina. Lockport has a movie theater complex, bowling and other attractions; Medina has a well-known railroad museum among its things to do. Golden Hill State Park is just north of Hartland in Somerset. Olcott Beach and the entire hamlet of Olcott are on the lakeshoreline in neighboring Newfane.

Pros & Cons Wide-open rural space is the attraction here. You’re about equally distant from busier Lockport to the southwest and Medina in Orleans County to the east. Lake Ontario and all it has to offer are a quick drive north.
