Welcome to Lockport, NY

Overview

Lockport is a town in Niagara County that surrounds the city of Lockport, which is the county seat of Niagara County. Lockport is bordered to the north by Newfane and a small part of Hartland; to the east by Royalton; to the south by Erie County (town of Clarence); and to the west by Cambria and Pendleton. Lockport’s name derived from the number of locks on the Erie Canal here (locks allow travel of boats from low-lying areas to higher-lying areas).

Essentials

For grocery shopping, Lockport has three Top’s Friendly Markets stores (on Rochester Road, on South Transit Road and on Lockport/Olcott Road). The closest Wegmans supermarkets are on Transit Road in Williamsville (about 12 miles south) and on Niagara Falls Boulevard in Amherst (about 13 miles southwest). For retail shopping, Lockport has a Walmart Supercenter, smaller national chains like Walgreen’s and Bon Ton, and several smaller, specialty stores like the Erie Canal Discovery Center Gift Shop, Little Voice Books and Toys, a home décor shop and antique shops.

Recreation & Entertainment

Lockport has a number of interesting attractions and even has a tourism bureau. Many of the attractions, naturally, focus on the Erie Canal and the historic locks here. The Lockport Locks and Erie Canal Cruises is a popular boat ride on the canal. The Erie Canal Discovery Center is on Church Street. The Lockport Cave and Underground Boat Ride takes visitors past the locks, through a 1,600-foot tunnel and on an underground boat ride.

Transportation & Traffic

Route 31 is the major east-west highway in the area. Route 77 and Route 78 are north-south highways. The canal, of course, provides boating and sightseeing cruises. The Buffalo-Niagara International Airport is just 15 miles south in Williamsville.
