Overview Royalton is a town in the southeast corner of Niagara County, bordered to the north by Hartland, to the east by Orleans County (town of Shelby and the Iroquois National Wildlife Refuge), to the south by Erie County (town of Newstead) and to the west by Lockport and partly by the town of Clarence, Erie County. Royalton includes several hamlets, the best-known of which is Gasport, and the village of Middleport, which is in the northeast corner of town and partly shared by Hartland. There are plenty of wide-open spaces in this geographically large town; along with the nearby Iroquois National Wildlife Refuge, the Royalton Ravine County Park is here, and part of the Tonawanda Wildlife Management Area is in the southeast part of town. An uninhabited part of the Tonawanda Reservation also is in Royalton. The Erie Canal runs through Middleport. You’ll find the most “action” in Gasport, which has a few stores, and in Middleport, which has the school district headquarters, a family-health center, farm markets and a general store. Local Museums & Landmarks The Post Office in Middleport is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. You can find more historic sites in nearby Lockport (9 miles west) and Medina in Orleans County (about 12 miles northeast). A branch campus of Genesee Community College is in Medina.

Essentials For shopping, Gasport has a Dollar General store and Middleport has a Corner Store. A wider variety of shopping choices can be found in Lockport and in Medina, both of which are short drives from Royalton. For groceries, Lockport has three Top’s Friendly Markets stores and Medina has one, and both towns have smaller groceries (like the Nice n Easy Grocery Shoppe in Medina). The closest Wegmans supermarkets are longer drives – there’s one in Amherst in one in Williamsville, both about 19 miles away. For more retail shopping, Lockport has a Walmart Supercenter, pharmacies, a Big Lots and other stores. The Royalton Hartland Central School District serves residents in this region and has one each elementary, middle and high schools. The Royalton Hartland Community Library, which also serves both towns, is at 9 Vernon St. in Royalton. Lockport and Medina both have hospitals that serve this region.

Royalton Ravine County Park is a nice place for a picnic; Golden Hills State Park is north, in the village of Barker. For more things to do, nearby Lockport and Medina, again, are your best bets. The Medina Railroad Museum is a popular attraction with train rides and other regular events. Lockport has cave tours, boat rides through the Erie Canal locks, a movie theater complex and more.
