Overview

Somerset is the northeastern-most town in Niagara County, bordered to the north by Lake Ontario, to the east by Orleans County (town of Ridgeway), to the south by Hartland and to the west by Newfane. Somerset has five hamlets and the village of Barker, which is centrally located. Golden Hill State Park is in the northeastern part of town. This is a wide-open, rural, sparsely populated town with only about 2,600 residents.


Essentials

For grocery shopping, major stores are a short drive from Somerset; your best bets for shopping choices are in Medina in neighboring Orleans County (18 miles southeast) and the city of Lockport (18 miles southwest). Top’s Friendly Markets has a store is Medina and three in Lockport. Medina also has a smaller Nice n Easy Grocery Shoppe, the Ridge Way Bulk Food Bakery and min marts.



Recreation & Entertainment

Outdoor recreation is the attraction here, including fishing, hunting, boating, camping, hiking and picnicking. Golden Hill State Park offers a number of outdoor activities and has a campground that has been named among the best in the country. Olcott Beach Carousel Park is a small, old-time amusement park in the village of Olcott, just 8 miles west of Somerset.



Transportation & Traffic

Route 18 runs east-west along the northern edge of Somerset. Route 148 runs north-south and intersects with Route 18. Route 269 is another north-south highway, acting as the dividing line between Niagara and Orleans counties on the eastern edge of town.



Pros & Cons

Small-town charm and proximity to Lake Ontario are plusses. A state park is within the town’s borders, and Somerset is close to a charming little amusement park, a drive-in and other quaint attractions.
